UMass Memorial Laboratories

With state-of-the-art equipment, UMass Memorial Laboratories has the capacity to perform a full range of both routine and esoteric tests in a short turnaround time. The labs possess the most modern front-end automation system available to significantly reduce the time associated with sample processing. The labs are staffed with more than 425 medical technologists and other administrative and support personnel, including 15 physicians and PhD-level professionals all certified and experienced in various types of laboratory testing practices.

The department performs more than 8 million tests annually. On-site testing capabilities represent approximately 95 percent of our services with the remaining forwarded to our national reference lab for rapid processing.

Our client base represents the health care community at large, serving more than 1000 physicians, including clinicians in private practice, community hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals and long-term care facilities. The labs also serve the testing needs for the Correctional System for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Medical Examiners Office, principle investigators for National Institutes of Health grants and national reference and local independent laboratories. In addition, UMass Memorial Laboratories is a preferred contracted vendor for referenced laboratory services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The UMass Memorial Laboratories is housed in 38,000 square feet of modern space at the Biotech Research Park, adjacent to the UMass Memorial University Campus. Rapid response laboratories are situated on both the Memorial and University Campuses, providing services to inpatients, emergency services and the nationally recognized Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
