Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Program The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulate all clinical laboratory testing in the UnitedStates through the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). In order for any laboratory to receive CMS payments, they must comply with CLIA regulations. All of the UMass Memorial Laboratories' facilities are CLIA certified.
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations The Joint Commission (JCAHO) is the most important accreditation organization for health care systems in this country. JCAHO sets the standards by which health care quality is measured in America and around the world. The goal of JCAHO is to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public by our nation's health care organizations. UMass Memorial Medical Center, including UMass Memorial Laboratories, is JCAHO accredited.
College of American Pathologists The College of American Pathologists (CAP) provides the only laboratory accreditation program designed and maintained by laboratory experts. This has ensured that CAP-accredited laboratories have met the highest standards of excellence. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations have deemed CAP accreditation as equivalent to or more stringent than national regulatory requirements. UMass Memorial Laboratories is accredited by CAP.
American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) The AABB accreditation program assesses all aspects of a laboratory's protocols and operational systems to ensure that the care provided to patients and donors comply with the highest standards of quality and safety. UMass Memorial Laboratories is AABB accredited.
Massachusetts Department of Health The Clinical Laboratory Program of the Massachusetts DOH inspects laboratories to ensure compliance with Commonwealth and Federal (CLIA) regulations. UMass Memorial Laboratories is certified by the Massachusetts Department of Health.
American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) The Histocompatibility Laboratory, as well as the laboratory director and technologists, are certified by ASHI. As stated on its web site: "The American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics is a professional society dedicated to advancing the science and practice of immunogenetics and its impact on the quality of human life."
