Cumulative Susceptibility Reports (Antibiograms)

Cumulative Susceptibility Reports display information based on testing large numbers of clinical isolates of different pathogenic bacteria. The observed frequency of susceptibility depends on many factors, including choice of isolates for testing, patient population studied, regional/geographic variation, local patterns of antibiotic utilization, analysis of data, etc. Cumulative susceptibility data, therefore, may be useful for determining initial empiric therapy for patients before results of testing on their own isolates are available. This data may also be useful for documenting changes in susceptibility over time for an institution or group of patients. This could lead to intervention by changing drug-prescribing recommendations in order to prevent the widespread emergence of resistant organisms.

The susceptibility patterns are listed below for major pathogens isolated January 1 through December 31, of the previous year. Susceptibility interpretations are reported according to NCCLS standards current at the time of testing. The General Cumulative Susceptibility Report includes data for pathogens regardless of type of specimen or patient location (i.e., Inpatients and Outpatients). Because the General Report may be somewhat skewed toward resistant organisms by the inclusion of inpatients, a Cumulative Susceptibility Report from selected Outpatient locations is also included. Also, the panels of antibiotics used for testing the different types of bacterial pathogens can be viewed through the links on the left.

The susceptibility of individual clinical isolates may be different from the aggregate data compiled for a pathogen, so specific susceptibility test results should be used for clinical isolates. Therapeutic decisions should not be based entirely on susceptibility results, but should also take into consideration other clinical features like site of infection, underlying medical conditions, etc.
