Central Processing

The Central Processing Laboratory provides the primary specimen handling and outreach registration services for the UMass Memorial Laboratories. It is responsible for receiving all specimens submitted to the laboratories, registering patient information, and preparing the specimens for the requested testing. Specimens are received from member hospitals, long-term care facilities, clients, clinicians and affiliated hospitals.

Central Processing Laboratory facilities are located on the second floor of Biotech One (University Campus), within the Rapid Response Laboratory (University Campus) and in the Clinical Laboratories located on the first floor of the Memorial Campus. Our Biotech One Central Processing facility is home to one of the largest automated front-end specimen processors in the country. It distributes approximately six million specimens per year to UMass Memorial laboratories as well as to our reference laboratories.

The units operate 24 hours per day, every day.
