WebLINK - Web-Based Office System Interface

The WebLINK application provides a means of secure communications between remote clients and the UMMHC network, for sending and receiving patient information over the World Wide Web.

WebLINK was developed to interface with a client applications that have the ability to create and process HL7 transactions using ASCII-encoded data files. By installing the WebLINK application on the client workstation or server, the practice management system (or electronic medical records system) can save HL7 orders (ORM Messages) to a specific folder, which the WebLINK application monitors. The practice management system or EMR can also monitor another folder for the presence of HL7 results (ORU messages), which are also stored as ASCII-encoded files. The WebLINK application provides all of the Internet and Web connectivity, plus very strong data encryption necessary to insure patient privacy.

The WebLINK communications architecture provides very secure data between remote Internet clients and the internal UMass Memorial network using standard Web connections. This proprietary architecture supports encrypted 'data tunneling' from the remote site, through an intermediate proxy server, to the secure application servers running behind the UMassMemorial firewall. When exposed to the Internet, the data is secured in 192-bit encrypted packets, using a dual-key encryption scheme. This architecture was developed specifically to allow use of the Internet and web for secure data transfers between laboratory clients and the UMass Memorial internal network and has been in use at UMass Memorial Laboratories for several years.
