Hematology/Coagulation

The Hematology/Coagulation Laboratory, endowed with the most advanced and constantly renewed equipment, comprises four sections: routine hematology, special hematology, routine coagulation and special coagulation. The laboratory functions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Over 700 thousand individual tests are performed by the Hematology Laboratory each year, including routine and esoteric assays.

The Routine Hematology Service includes all parameters related to complete blood counts (CBC) and reticulocytes. All abnormal peripheral blood smears are flagged by sophisticated software, reviewed by a technologist and, when indicated or upon request by the clinician, by the laboratory director.

The Special Hematology Service menu includes: red cell osmotic fragility, sickle cell screen, sucrose lysis and Ham’s test, hemoglobin electrophoresis (interpretations only), G6PD screens, LAP, cytospins, and urine eosinophile counts.

The Routine Coagulation Service performs: PT/INR, PTT, fibrinogen, antithrombin, latex FDP and D-dimer (screening for DIC/fibrinolysis) testing and our DIC panel.

The Special Coagulation Service has an extensive menu, including: coagulation factors and inhibitors, venous and arterial thrombophilia panels, lupus anticoagulant and accurate measurements of circulating heparin by an anti factor X assay. Also offered is the highly sensitive D-dimer test to rule out DVT or PE. A complete functional platelet aggregation panel and ristocetin- or heparin- induced platelet aggregation testing is available.
