Immunology, Serology and Immunoassay

The UMass Memorial Laboratories Clinical Immunology Service offers a wide range of assays to aid in the diagnosis, management and monitoring of medical problems associated with various immunological and infectious diseases. This laboratory is organized into several sections that perform diagnostic testing for autoimmune diseases, allergen sensitivity, as well as infectious disease and HIV serological testing.

The laboratory performs a variety of esoteric testing, including protein electrophoresis and immunofixation, detection of hemoglobin undefined variants and hemoglobin A1C quantification. The laboratory offers a number of immunoassays, including radio-immunoassays, for other medical conditions, including assays for tumor markers, routine and specialized endocrine testing and other esoteric analyses. Sweat chloride testing, for the confirmation of cystic fibrosis, is performed in this laboratory section.

This laboratory performs over half a million tests annually using a variety of immunoassay analyzers, electrophoresis systems, HPLC, nephelometry and other semiautomated microplate immunoassay systems. Introduction of exciting state of the art/cutting edge technologies is a continuous process in this division, resulting in better quality, improvement of turn around time and lower test costs.  In December 2006, the Antinuclear antibody testing was automated using a new multiplex technology that measures 11 antibodies at the same time. Currently, the lab is validating automated HIV screening and capillary electrophoretic screening for monoclonal gammopathies.

The lab operates from 6 am-12 pm, Monday through Friday providing service to clinicians and other health care clients. The technical staff at the Clinical Immunology Laboratory are certified medical technologists with years of clinical laboratory experience.
