Molecular Diagnostic Testing

In early 2004, UMass Memorial Laboratories embarked on a joint venture with University of Massachusetts Medical School to create and operate a Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. As the deciphering of the human genome promises to forever change the way diseases are studied, this emerging technology significantly enhances the potential to identify molecular causes of certain diseases. Through molecular diagnosis, clinicians and technologists have a powerful tool to examine DNA variations in the human genetic code that contribute to a wide range of medical disorders.

Our laboratory processes more than 15,000 specimens for molecular diagnostic testing annually. In-house testing for human genetic mutations include: Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (C677T and A1298C), Factor V Leiden and Prothrombin 20210 detection. In-house testing for microbial pathogens include: viral load testing for HIV and HCV and detection of C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae and Group A Streptococcus. In addition to testing performed in-house, a robust menu of tests is available through our secondary referral laboratories.
