Reference Laboratory Testing

While the UMass Memorial Laboratories offer an extensive menu of testing performed in-house, there is still a need to refer esoteric testing to contracted laboratories. The Referral Laboratory is staffed by a team of experienced processors Monday through Friday from 8 am to 11:30 pm. Samples are processed for shipping and then picked up for shipment to the outside laboratories twice per day, in the afternoon and evening.

We complete an extensive review process when selecting the contracted laboratories used to perform referral testing on our behalf and they are held to the same standards we set for testing performed by our in-house laboratories. Quality assurance standards, turnaround times and pricing are some of the criteria we consider when choosing a reference laboratory. We only contract with those that are able to meet our high standards.

The Referral Laboratory staff is always willing to help identify a reference laboratory that can perform uncommon assays not performed by our laboratory sections. We can also provide access to our laboratory's professional staff who may be able to offer alternate testing strategies for esoteric tests, many of which can be done here with reduced turnaround times. Our directors, managers, and technologists provide a wealth of knowledge and they are always willing to help with difficult clinical diagnoses and esoteric testing questions; please do not hesitate to utilize our resources.
